I just returned from an excellent conference on cellular towers and public health in northeastern Connecticut. The conference was sponsored by the Berkshire-Litchfield Environmental Council and numerous other environmental groups. There was a whole day's worth of experts who brought us all up to speed on the science, engineering. law and public policy surrounding this issue. There were over 200 attendees, primarily planning and zoning people, with a healthy sprinkling of Telecom industry folk who were there to learn along with the rest of us, we must assume. I am sure we all will be hearing more about what transpired at this day long conference from others on this list who attended.
Coincidentally, last Friday, December 1, the Connecticut voted to transfer tower siting authority to the Connecticut State Siting Council. This move was attempted in other states, notably, Vermont and Massachusetts, but failed. Medical scientist journalist and EMF researcher, B. Blake Leavitt, who moderated the conference. was concerned about the overall impact of this decision on local control. Apparently, the telecommunications industry pushed hard. There are many areas of Connecticut which "cell-tower free" and to the Telecom carriers, that means these communities are "underserved" and do not provide adequate signal to cellular users. Fewer towers can mean more powerful co-location facilities and the photo "Reyn" sent may be the result of that planning process.
So, in addition to "Reyn's" concerns about this cellular tower, I would be concerned about where to purchase a home in Connecticut, since the local officials are now even less able to represent their constituents on where to site towers.
Dr.. Bill Curry, a semi-retired consulting physicist and member of the EMF-list, presented a field test he conducted on a neighborhood in Duanesburg, New York where for at least three years, people have been reporting health problems. One of the families who live there, the Sankovitches, attended the conference and reported on the incidence of disease and economic losses that they and their neighbors have experienced. According to Dr. Curry, this community of homes is receiving RF exposures from multiple sources and these combined sources are creating exposure conditions which exceed the FCC guidelines. Their situation is only one that we know about. There are many more stories like this in our country.

Update 12-09-00 [correction?]
I need to correct something. You forwarded a small report regarding the Connecticut Conference a week ago. In that email message I made a factual error which I need to correct. I stated that Dr. Curry had reported he conducted an RF field test at or near the Stankovitch home in Duanesburg New York and that these measurements revealed exposure conditions over the FCC guidelines. Dr. Curry did not report those findings at the meeting. I do not want anyone who is professionally engaged or otherwise following this issue to be misled by my erroneous statements in that earlier report.
